Master Builder Of The Year Award Winner – 2017

Cheadle Hulme business owner scoops ‘Heavenly Builder’ award

Ian Henderson from Hende Building Services Ltd has been named the most Heavenly Builder in the North West for the second year running as part of the Federation of Master Builders’ (FMB) Master Builder Awards 2017.

Ian saw off some tough competition to claim the region’s Heavenly Builder Award thanks to his gentle consideration of a heavenly pregnant client who had remained living on site. Ian is now in with a chance of winning the national category title at the Master Builder Awards held at the Intercontinental Park Lane Hotel in London on 15th September 2017 hosted by TV presenter and building enthusiast Nick Knowles.

Now in its 13th year, the Master Builder Awards continues to be a flagship for high-quality building work. Organised by the FMB, the awards programme is unique in that any project entered by the builder must be backed up by the customer – giving home owners the opportunity to support those building companies that have delivered exceptional results.

The Heavenly Builder category is one in which the winner really epitomises what the awards are all about as it looks for evidence of professionalism, courtesy and exceptional customer service.
Ian Henderson and his team at Hende Building Services have a track record of great client relations and this project, a large single storey extension in Cheadle Hulme, was no different. His friendly service and caring nature towards the client’s family and property meant Ian was a shoo-in for this award. When starting the project, Ian’s client was eight months pregnant with her second child and his deconstruction and rebuild was so carefully planned and executed that the family was able to remain living in their home.

Steve Laurence, FMB North Director, said: “The Heavenly Builder award gives clients the opportunity to thank their builder for going above and beyond the call of duty to complete the job and turn a potentially stressful experience into an enjoyable one.

“Time and time again we have been impressed with just how far these builders will go to ensure their client is happy. It is this dedication that we want to celebrate. Ian should feel justly proud of his achievement in winning the Heavenly Builder award, and we wish him every success in the national competition.”

Master Builder Of The Year Award Winner – 2016

Hende Building Services, scooped a top industry gong at the 12th Federation of Master Builders’ (FMB), Master Builder of the Year Awards on Wednesday 18th February. Ian Henderson, Director of the family firm, walked away with the award for Heavenly Builder of the Year after selflessly assisting a local family in desperate need of help.

In 2013 the Austin family realised their 30s three-bed semi in Cheadle Hulme was not suitable for the family’s needs. This came after their daughter, at the age of two, was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and subsequently underwent chemotherapy and a liver transplant. However, despite borrowing money from their family, Dave and Becky Austin did not have the budget to do the necessary work to their home. At the end of their first meeting Ian Henderson found himself sitting in his car thinking about the family, dismayed at their predicament, and there and then he decided that regardless of budget he would do the necessary work for them.

Ian enlisted the help of his suppliers. “I explained the situation, told them I was doing the job at cost, and said any assistance would be appreciated,” he said. They all came good. He negotiated a special price from the skip hire firm, another company in Scotland donated timber, and others worked extra hours for nothing.
Ian and his team built a wraparound extension and kitchen/lounge in which Becky could cook while still monitoring her daughter’s movements.

By working through the night, everything was ready for the family’s return from hospital. When they arrived home, there was an even bigger surprise in store. Ian had replastered and redecorated the young girl’s bedroom for nothing, and sorted out a condensation problem.

“He went above and beyond the call of duty,” said Dave. “All the work was done while we were with Emilie in hospital. They found the damp had spread to the stairs, so they treated and replaced everything for free. I’m in the interior business myself, and I’ve come across a lot of builders. Quite honestly, Ian is above the rest.”
The judges were bowled over by Ian’s gallant act saying he “meets all the criteria and more for a heavenly builder. A real life-saver for the family.”

The 12th Master Builder of the Year Awards, a nationwide search by the FMB to find the best builders in Britain, looked at the builders’ technical ability together with their customer service skills. The awards are unique, as every entrant must be nominated by a satisfied customer.
